Description

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is the national regulatory body in Ghana mandated by Parts 6, 7 and 8 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) to assure the safety, quality and efficacy of human and veterinary medicines, food, biological products, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances and clinical trials, and the control and use of tobacco products, through the enforcement of relevant local and international standards to protect the health of the people in Ghana.

Mission

The FDA exists to assure the safety, quality and efficacy of human and veterinary drugs, food, biological products, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances and clinical trials, and the control and use of tobacco products, through the enforcement of relevant standards to protect public health.

List of Sectors Covered

Progressive Licensing Scheme, which is a three (3) staged licensing regime to support small business units to improve on the safety, quality and wholesomeness of their products. Over 90% of local industries that fall under the purview of the FDA are SMEs which are mainly operated by women and young entrepreneurs in the food, cosmetics or household chemical sectors in virtually all districts of the country.

What kind of support is available for Women-Owned Businesses (WOBs) now?

Adoption of a risk-based categorization of regulated products for its registration requirements which will shorten the period of registration of goods. FDA has reviewed its fees and charges downward to allow micro and small businesses to obtain market authorization for their products.
